It was Thursday, the day after Galungan. It seemed there were more sick and abandoned animals than usual on the roads that day. Everyone was off for a three day Galungan holiday and left their dogs behind. By the time we got to them for street feeding, they were starving and it seemed the ones who had demodectic mange that we had been treating on the road were in worse conditions. I believed it was because they didn’t have any food for the last few days.

When I was driving by near Pejeng market, I saw this little puppy, maybe about 3 months old. She was in a very bad condition with bleeding red raw skin and scabies, had no hair on the face and constantly scratching. The puppy was living underneath a side walk in a gutter. I couldn’t imagine what would’ve happened to this poor puppy had it been raining. I spent about 30 minutes coaxing her out with food and tried to keep other dogs away at the same time. After I called someone from my house to come and help me, an hour later we managed to catch the puppy in a towel. She was quite scared for the first few minutes, but then she quieted down very quickly. The puppy was obviously very sick so I brought her to the office and later on she was sent to the clinic by our staff.

In between then, I found a spot where there were five adult dogs, with very bad case of demodectic mange and scabies. I managed to treat all of them with medication and got them to eat oral Ivermectin and worm tablets.

At the moment, unfortunately, we are out of stock of the medication. If any of you are coming to Bali and have a room in your luggage, please consider bringing oral Ivermectin -which really helps for the skin parasites- and worm medicine with you. These medications are lifesaver for these dogs. Even when they have enough food, there is not enough nutrition they can get from the food and they are overburdened with parasites. We are desperate for help, so if you can please donate and bring medicine with you, it will make a great difference in these animals’ lives and will be greatly appreciated.
